Internet startup CribSocial, launches to help people socialize with locals in their community
San Francisco, CA - Nov 1, 2009 - Recently launched, internet startup, CribSocial, creates a network where people within local communities can connect and engage in social activities of similar interests. The service is free and lets people create and participate in various activities such as dancing, educational classes, attending movies, trying new foods, and number of other activities. "The goal of the website is to encourage people to socialize more with locals in their community and experience the world outside virtual social communities" says Founder, Ravinder Virk.
Since the emergence of social networks such as Facebook and Myspace, people have been increasingly spending more and more time socializing solely through online communities and ignoring life outside online world. Online social communities are sometimes creating a more isolated world by keeping people at home in front of computers. Children are increasingly using online networks as their sole means of communication, avoiding real life social and physical interactions.
CribSocial's innovative service is changing that by offering people a tool to connect online and meet in person to engage in activities of shared interests. The free service only requires you to create a short profile in order to create and participate in any social activity. "If you are looking for a dance partner or someone to go to the movies with, or just someone to play tennis with, you can find them on CribSocial" says Virk.
Besides the individual activities the service also allows you to create events such as concerts and sporting events, as well as social groups that meet regularly. The site also helps organizers manage dates, times and share comments about activities . The activities can be searched using keywords, category, participants, and proximity by zip code. The location of activities is also shown in a map for a better geographical understanding of the location.
The company is launched to the US market and plans to expand internationally within a year. The site is already seeing various activities forming across the country. Keeping their commitment to being completely free for users, the service displays textual ads as a source of revenue.
The founder of CribSocial, Virk is an entrepreneur from Silicon Valley who grew up in India. Since graduating from UC Berkeley with bachelors in Computer Science in 2005, he has been working for one of the leading online price comparison shopping engines, Nextag Inc. Virk also helped to make the independent music site, Vjingle.com, a reality.
"CribSocial's mission is to get people to socialize with real people with similar interests. It is not a social networking site, but rather a way for people to get off the computer and get out and experience the world", Says Virk.
